Rainy Day Activities
Rainy Day Activities in Brown County, Indiana (Plus Columbus & Bloomington)
Here’s something I’ve learned after eight years of hosting: guests who arrive with a rainy day plan almost always have a better trip than guests who don’t. Not because rain is wonderful — though sometimes it is — but because having a plan means you’re never stuck staring at the ceiling wondering what to do.
Brown County in the rain is genuinely lovely. The galleries feel more inviting. The coffee shops slow down. Downtown Nashville, which can feel like a lot on a busy fall weekend, becomes easier to actually enjoy. And if you want to venture out a little further, Columbus and Bloomington are both easy drives that open up a whole other set of options.
Here’s how I’d plan it.
Rain in the forecast? Here’s the short version.
Stay close to Nashville: the Brown County Public Library, the Nature Center at Brown County State Park, downtown galleries and shops, the Brown County Music Center, and the Abe Martin Lodge aquatic center.
Venture further: Columbus has Kidscommons, The Commons, and Zaharakos. Bloomington has WonderLab, the Eskenazi Museum, the Lilly Library, and some of the best bookshops and coffeehouses in southern Indiana.
The best rainy day activities right in Brown County.
My first recommendation is always to start local. Nashville has more going on indoors than most visitors expect — and keeping things close means you can pop back to your rental whenever you want without committing to a long drive in the rain.
- Brown County Public Library — One of my favorite low-key suggestions. Books, puzzles, quiet corners, and local programming. Especially lovely for families and anyone wanting a slow, unhurried morning.
- Brown County State Park Nature Center — A great indoor alternative when the trails are muddy. Learn about local wildlife, chat with a ranger, and still feel like you’re getting the park experience.
- Brown County Music Center — Check the event calendar before you go. If there’s a show during your stay, a rainy evening just became a genuinely great night out. Read my full Brown County Music Center guide for more.
- Downtown Nashville galleries and shops — Rainy afternoons are perfect for this. Slower pace, more time to actually look at things, shop owners who have time to talk. This is Brown County at its most personal.
- Abe Martin Lodge aquatic center — The rainy day anchor for families. Water features, warm water, and kids who actually sleep well afterward. Check hours and day-pass info before you go.
Couples tend to gravitate toward the galleries, a long lunch, and an evening show. Families do best with one active indoor stop and one slower one. Either way, leave some time to just be back at the rental — some of the best rainy day moments are the unplanned ones around the kitchen table.
“Guests often tell me the unplanned, in-between moments are the part of the trip they remember most.”
Columbus on a rainy day — a genuinely great option.
Columbus is about 25 minutes from Brown County and one of my favorite places to send guests when they want a change of scenery without a long drive. The architecture alone is worth the trip — and a rainy day is actually a lovely time to experience it.
- Kidscommons Children’s Museum — Three stories of hands-on exhibits for ages 1–12, including one of the most memorable indoor slides in Indiana.
- The Commons Indoor Playground — Great for kids who need to move and climb while adults enjoy nearby downtown shops and cafés.
- Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor & Museum — A beautifully preserved early 1900s soda fountain with vintage charm and classic treats.
- Architecture by car — Columbus has more significant modern buildings per capita than almost anywhere in the country. A rainy afternoon is a lovely time to take them in from your car.
Rain or shine, Brown County is better with a great place to come home to.

Bloomington on a rainy day — more than you’d expect.
Bloomington is about 20 minutes from Brown County and genuinely one of the best rainy day options in southern Indiana. A college town with serious cultural infrastructure — good museums, great bookshops, excellent coffee — and enough going on that you can fill a whole day without planning too hard.
- WonderLab Science Museum — Hands-on science exhibits especially great for ages 4–12. High energy, interactive, and genuinely fun for curious kids.
- Eskenazi Museum of Art — Beautifully curated. Works well for couples, adults, and older kids who enjoy art and design in a thoughtful setting.
- Lilly Library — Rare manuscripts, beautiful reading rooms, and a quieter cultural outing for book lovers and history lovers.
- Bookshops and coffeehouses — Bloomington is full of cozy places to browse and linger. This is exactly the kind of day those places were made for.
Both cities are close enough to feel like easy day trips — explore for a few hours and still make it back to Brown County in time for dinner, a hot tub soak, or a quiet evening in.
“A rainy day in Brown County isn’t something to work around. It’s just a different kind of good day.”
My formula for a rainy day that actually feels good.
Stop trying to save the day and start leaning into what Brown County does beautifully: slower moments, local character, comfort food, indoor discoveries, and cozy places that invite you to settle in.
- Start local — Coffee, breakfast, or a slow morning in Nashville before deciding whether to stay nearby or head to Bloomington or Columbus.
- One active stop, one slow stop — Pair something that burns energy with something that restores it. Aquatic center then library. WonderLab then a long lunch. Galleries then dinner.
- Leave room to just be at the rental — Cards on the table, a hot drink, a movie, listening to the rain outside. Some of the best rainy day moments are the simplest ones.
The Helmsburg Homestead has a swim spa that becomes especially appealing when it’s gray outside. The 1891 Schoolhouse Inn has the kind of interior — warm wood, wavy glass windows, crackling fire — that a rainy afternoon was practically invented for.
Either way, you’ll be fine. Better than fine, actually.
